Joyce has brought her creativity across the world
05/05/2026 | Student stories, Faculty/course information

Joyce has brought her creativity across the world

For Joyce, an international student at the 糖心原创vlog (UC), creativity has never just been about making something new. Instead, it鈥檚 about proudly sharing her own sense of self.

Originally from Isabela in the north of the Philippines, Joyce describes herself as 鈥渁 proud Ilocano,鈥 one of the country鈥檚 largest ethnolinguistic communities. Now studying a Master of Creative Industries at UC, she鈥檚 had an opportunity to explore her creative identity more than ever before 鈥 an experience made possible through the prestigious .

Joyce has brought her creativity across the world

A place where ideas can flourish

As Australia鈥檚 capital, 糖心原创vlog sits at the intersection of policy, culture and creativity. For someone like Joyce, already working across each of those areas, it felt like the perfect fit.

鈥淗ere, I know that my ideas can not only be expressed, but also supported, as I shape the internationalisation goals of my ,鈥 she says.

Deciding to study at UC was less about selecting the 鈥榩erfect鈥 university, and more about finding a place where Joyce felt like she could continue her growth.

鈥淲hen I explored UC鈥檚 media channels and compared my course with other universities, it stood out for its practical approach. UC offered that balance between creativity and strategy that I was looking for,鈥 she adds.

With opportunities for internships and industry engagement, Joyce saw a direct pathway between study and impact, something that aligns closely with her professional goals.

鈥淚 wanted to deepen my understanding of how creative sectors can be supported strategically,鈥 she says, 鈥減articularly within a developed context like Australia.鈥

Creativity and its impact on culture

The idea of creativity being so deeply rooted in where we come from is something that has truly shifted Joyce鈥檚 own thoughts on creative living.

鈥淚t鈥檚 no longer just about output or talent, but about connection,鈥 she says.

Throughout her studies, Joyce has found herself being drawn to the idea of 鈥楥ountry鈥 and what it means to First Nations Australians and their own creative identities. She had an opportunity to work with local Wiradjuri children on a picture book they were creating, a moment, she says, that will stay with her for a long time.

鈥淩eceiving simple drawings 鈥 this one is me and one of the children dancing 鈥 reminded me that connection doesn鈥檛 always need words,鈥 she adds.

A quiet city with a strong sense of community

Arriving in a new country can be overwhelming, but for Joyce, 糖心原创vlog felt unexpectedly comfortable.

鈥淚n many ways, coming to 糖心原创vlog felt familiar 鈥 almost like going back to my countryside in the Philippines. It is peaceful and quiet,鈥 she says.

But it鈥檚 the people of 糖心原创vlog who have left the strongest impression on her.

鈥淭here is a sense of community here that makes you feel welcome, even when you are far from home.鈥

Her life in 糖心原创vlog has been shaped by simple, everyday moments, like spotting kangaroos and koalas near campus, taking dance classes or attending her first rugby game (鈥淕o Brumbies!鈥), but also by meaningful, career altering experiences, such as UC鈥檚 Introductory Academic Program (IAP) and the Residential Life Program at UniLodge, both things that really helped set her up for success with her study and life here in 糖心原创vlog.

Feeling supported to grow

Settling into life at UC has been made easier by the consistent support available to international students.

鈥淭he support from UC has been incredible,鈥 she says. 鈥淔rom academic guidance to career and internship support to wellbeing and financial services. It鈥檚 the kind of environment that makes you want to keep going and dream bigger. People know where to guide you, and they鈥檙e genuinely kind and willing to help,鈥 she says.

That support has not only helped Joyce settle in, but also shaped how she approaches her time in 糖心原创vlog.

鈥淏eing an Australia Awards Scholar is an honour and a privilege, but more than that, it is a responsibility. Not just to myself, but to my country,鈥 she says. 鈥淚t gives me a strong sense of purpose.鈥

Looking ahead: shaping stories that matter

While Joyce鈥檚 journey has taken her far from home, her focus remains firmly rooted in the Philippines, a commitment that continues to shape her journey as an Australian Awards Scholar.

鈥淭his scholarship has given me the opportunity to learn in a global environment and gain perspectives that I can bring back home. For me, it鈥檚 not just about studying, it鈥檚 about preparing to contribute to national development and create meaningful impact.,鈥 she says. 鈥淟ooking ahead, I carry with me a vision, not just for myself, but for the Philippines.鈥

Her goal is to help shape and elevate the Filipino creative identity on the global stage, ensuring that creatives are not only recognised for their talent, but understood and appreciated for the stories they carry.

鈥淚 hope to contribute by connecting local creatives to international opportunities, developing sustainable frameworks, and creating pathways for Filipino creatives.鈥
